June is Busting Out All Over!

Sunday, June 4, 2006 Communion

It’s Pentecost- WEAR RED, the sign of the Holy Spirit! Preacher Doyel will talk about the birthday of the Church (Read Acts 1 and 2) and speak to a few of the upcoming issues in our every-two-year national meeting of the Church called "The General Assembly." This will be a doozie of a meeting, and quite a bit of publicity will be generated from the votes. This is also the Pentecost Offering Sunday to help disadvantaged youth.

Preacher Doyel, Johnnie, and the LaVecks will then be in Carson City, Nevada for the week at the Mission Outreach Committee meeting returning for services June 11th. (Did you know the word "doozie" comes from the Jazz Age automobile called the Duesenberg? In the depression they were $15,000!!)

Sunday, June 11, 2006

You will hear from a doozie of a guy! Yes jazzy Preacher Doyel will be 59 that day and will preach a $15,000 sermon! Yes, it’s gonna be a birthday present to myself as I preach about my favorite scriptures.

Sunday, June 18, 2006 Father’s Day

The congregation will hear from another sports car kind of guy. One of our own, Mr. Ken Meats will speak to us. Mr. Meats resides here in Henderson with his lovely wife Sally, and has a background in the military, our airport, and Christian hypnotherapy. Come hear what Ken’s father taught him on Father’s Day!

Sunday, June 25, 2006

A very special guest speaker!

~Parson Doyel

Reverend and Mrs. Doyel will be gone from June 18th through June 25th.

Church Signs

Anyone who is interested in serving Christ and Henderson Presbyterian Church can do so by helping to identify what kind of signs are needed for the HPC Complex. If you are interested in serving on the Sign Committee, please let Chris Holman or Reverend Doyel know and we will get back to you.

Mexico Mission Trip

Our prayers are with Barbara Sylvis and volunteers as they travel to Mexico on the annual mission trip in July. Donations to help defray the cost of this worthy project would be gratefully appreciated.

Zep Sylvis is currently collecting and scanning photos concerning HPC activities, people, functions, and all things related-especially from the past. If you have photos that you are willing to part with for a day or two (or if you have digital photos), PLEASE contact ZEP at 565-0668 or by email at sylvis@ccmail.nevada.edu

Imagine having no home. You have no kitchen, no pots and pans, no can opener. Heck, you don’t even have any food! What are you going to do? No, you can’t go to the buffet at the Fiesta-you don’t have any money for that. You are out of luck!

Unfortunately, many people are in just this situation! But at least your kindness has made our Food Pantry available to them. The thing is, our Food Pantry has many items that these people cannot use. They have no can openers, so they can’t use food in regular cans. They have no refrigerators, so they can’t store any leftovers that need refrigeration. They have no silverware, plates, or pots and pans so they can’t cook spaghetti, rice, or macaroni and cheese. The majority of the people who come to our church’s Food Pantry are single and homeless. They often live out of a backpack and sleep in the desert. Please consider the following items the next time you are shopping and would like to contribute to the Food Pantry:

  • Small cans of fruits and vegetables with pop-top lids
  • Granola or cereal bars
  • Individual boxes of cereal
  • Small cans of milk
  • Juice boxes
  • Small cans of entrees like ravioli, stew, tuna, soups, hash, all with pop-top lids
  • Crackers
  • Peanut butter
  • Bottled water or other beverages
  • Trail mix
  • Cat food or dog food with pop-top lids

At the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, located in Baltimore, Maryland, a "Human Flag" first lived and breathed on Defender's Day, September 12, 1914. That date was the one- hundredth anniversary commenorating the War of 1812's successful defense of Baltimore from the British. The date also honored the anniversary of Francis Scott Key penning the words to what is now our National Anthem. The City of Baltimore, then led by Mayor James H. Preston, had planned a week-long extravaganza in observance of the Battle of North Point and the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore's harbor. The Event in September of 1914 featured 6500 local school children who, cloaked in red, white and blue, formed a giant replica of the Flag, which was appropriately named, "the Wonderful Human Flag." As the children took their places, they were also given a handkerchief of matching color so that it could be waved creating a rippling effect. After speeches by Mayor Preston, United States Secretary of State William Jennings Bryant (President Wilson's official representative). and others, the children rose to their feet and sang patriotic hymms accompanied by a 250 pice band.
The Human Flag wa not performed agin until 1983. In that year, the newly created National Flag Day Foundation, Inc. decided to sponsor an annual reenactment of the patriotic experience. The genesis of the group came about in 1980 with a group of interested Star Spangled Banner Flag Hours board members. On December 9, 1982, three Baltimore businessmen, Mr. Herbert E. Went, President, Mr. Louis V. Koerber and Mr. Richard M. Patterson, with a vision and dream, chartered the Foundation. The National Flag Day Foundation, Inc. believes that sharing patriotic experiences like the Living American Flag and the annual National Pause for the Pledge of allegiance give students a critical understanding of the history of our flag and its importance to all Americans.
