March into Holy Week with Christ at Henderson Presbyterian Church

Yes, Easter is very early this year, and Preacher Doyel hopes you can attend some of the services in Lent. Ever wonder why Easter is sometimes way into Spring or sometimes almost in Winter? Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25. Why the difference? Some holidays are always on the same date, such as Christmas on December 25. Some are always on the same day, such as Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday in November, but the date changes. Not Easter. It is a "moving Sunday," based on the moon.

Easter, the day of days and the glory of the Christian faith, is observed, according to a decision made by the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325, on the first Sunday after the date of the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21. Easter therefore, always falls between March 22 and April 25. Three-fourths of the church calendar is determined by the date of Easter, and Christianity has little meaning apart from the significance which Easter represents. The color for the communion table, lectern, and pulpit is white. White is the color for the Easter observance signifying purity, light, rejoicing, the sacred redeeming love of God.

Sunday, March 2, 2008

Preacher Doyel will preach about a harsh subject, but one that is very real and DID happen. This is the Crucifixion. No jokes this day, just a journey into Lent for all of us before the Easter dawn. Please read Mark 15:21-39. Communion will be moved from this Sunday to Easter Sunday.

Sunday, March 9, 2008

Our wonderful Parish Associate, the Reverend Hilda Pecoraro, will hold forth with the word. Many, many of you comment on how much you like her sermons, so be sure and note your calendar. Remember also, this is the start of Daylight Saving Time!

This is also the ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING SUNDAY OFFERING, where the churches around the world take up an offering to help those in need around the world and in your home town.

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Preacher Doyel will preach to anyone who shows up—about preaching!! The sermon will be the greatest one of the year—as I preach someone else’s sermon! The sermon will be one from Charles Colson, Watergate convict and prison pastor.

    Christian Education News

My name is Jan Pratt and I am your new Christian Education Chair person.  With the grace of God and the help of you, the congregation, I hope to spread the Good News of the Gospel to our Youth and Adults. My vision is to have our Youth population grow which will hopefully bring their parents.  I would like to have activities for the Junior and Senior High School students such as HIKING, BOWLING, BBQ's, and SWIM PARTIES, ETC.  We will be having Vacation Bible School as usual.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated and would be discussed with Rev. Doyel and session.

I thank you for allowing me to service this Congregation and will do my best to listen and create the type of education you will be proud of.

PS:  I need a volunteer to teach the K thru 5th grade for the following Sundays:  MARCH 9, APRIL 6, MAY 4, AND MAY 25.

    Jan Pratt

Confirmation Classes will be starting after Easter. Please see Jan Pratt or the Pastor if you or your child are interested in attending these classes. You must be finishing the 6th grade or older. Adults are also welcome to attend.

    Nutrition: Know the Facts

Taken from: For National Nutrition Month® 2008 Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact, www.eatright.org.

The month of March is National Nutrition Month®. Even though March has been chosen, the messages of nutrition month should be carried through the entire year. National Nutrition Month® (NNM) is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The campaign is designed to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

This year, the ADA urges consumers to look beyond the myths of nutrition and focus on the facts. In fact, the theme for 2008 is Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact.

    1) Eating right doesn't have to be complicated. Use www.MyPyramid.gov to develop a personalized plan for lifelong health.

    2) The best nutrition advice is based on science. Before adopting any changes to your diet, be sure the information is based in scientific fact.

    3) Get your food and nutrition facts from the expert: a registered dietitian. RDs are uniquely qualified to translate the science of nutrition into reliable advice you can use every day.

    4) Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is your best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness. 5) Think nutrient-rich rather than "good" or "bad" foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other healthful nutrients — and lower in calories.

    6) Look at the big picture: No single food or meal makes or breaks a healthful diet. Your total diet is the most important focus for healthful eating.

    7) Prepare, handle, and store food properly to keep you and your family safe from food-borne illness.

    8) Don’t fall prey to food myths and misinformation that may harm rather than benefit your health.

    9) Read food labels to get nutrition facts that help you make smart food choices quickly and easily.

    10) Find the healthy fats when making food choices. By choosing polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, you can keep your saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol low.

    Minutes of the Annual Meeting

    January 27, 2008

The annual meeting of the Henderson Presbyterian Church was opened in prayer by the Rev. Ross Doyel at 9:35 a.m. The Clerk certified that a quorum of more than fifteen members was present.

    1. Approval of minutes. Rev. Doyel announced that the Session had previously approved the minutes of the 2007 annual meeting and of the congregational meeting held on November 18, 2007. According to the Book of Order, congregational approval of these minutes is no longer necessary, but is required instead by the Session.
    2. Discussion of the 2008 budget. Rev. Doyel announced that the Session had approved the budget for 2008. Several members had questions on budget line items, including utilities, contracts, FICA, custodian, bookkeeper, Sunday school, office help and the nursery. Rev. Doyel provided answers to the various inquiries and reminded those in attendance that the Session may edit the budget as the year goes along if there appear to be shortfalls in certain areas.
    3. Approval of the Pastor’s 2008 salary package. Discussion was opened when a member noted that it appeared that Rev. Doyel was not going to receive much of an increase in his salary, based on the budget figures presented. Rev. Doyel explained that when he was first hired at HPC, his wife’s salary as church secretary was taken from his original salary package. When she resigned her position January 1, 2008, Session voted to add her salary to Rev. Doyel’s, in appreciation of all that he has accomplished as pastor. Unfortunately, these additional monies will increase the amount that must be contributed by the church to his pension and medical benefits, resulting in a very minimal raise. Rev. Doyel assured the congregation that he is satisfied with the salary package, which was then passed unanimously.
    4. Approval of board/committee and organizational reports. The reports presented were approved unanimously.
    5. Pastor’s reports. Rev. Doyel stated that it is an honor for him to serve HPC and he thanked Seminary Intern Lee Styer and Parish Associate Hilda Pecoraro for their invaluable help during the past year. He also thanked Johnnie Doyel and Carolyn LaVeck for their many years of service to the church, as secretary and treasurer, respectively. He remarked that while some issues, such as the use of the building and the Ritual of Friendship, will always be in contention, the hope of a new building should be the focus for the church as it moves into 2008. He remarked that any and all contributions would be gratefully accepted, even at this early stage of the design/build process! Rev. Pecoraro gave a brief history of her first call as a minister at Green Valley Presbyterian Church, and described her work now as a Chaplain at St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s Siena campus. As a Parish Associate, she serves HPC as needed and as available, without remuneration. She appreciates the opportunity to preach and wants very much to be available to everyone in the congregation. Rev. Doyel remarked on how delighted he is that Rev. Pecoraro will be leading new member classes in the future.

There were no other items presented for discussion and the meeting was adjourned in prayer by Rev. Doyel at 10:12 a.m.

    Moderator Clerk of Session
