THE NEW YEAR!!!

Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2008                Communion

Yes, it is not often that Epiphany actually falls on a Sunday. Epiphany is the end of the 12 days of Christmas and is the day the non-Jewish (gentile) Wise Men, or Magi, found the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It is their twelve-days-journey from seeing the Christmas Star to Epiphany (God revealed), so naturally, let’s hear about the Wise Men, or Magi, and how they found the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.

The Children’s Christmas Pageant, "Another ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas," was held on Sunday, December 16th at both services. Thank you so much for your support and kind remarks. Our youth and children worked very hard to make this program a success, and everyone had a great time.

Thank You!!

The Committee on Mission would like to thank each and every one of you who contributed gifts and kindness to the Angel Tree Project. Because of your goodness, we were able to make Christmas just a little brighter for OVER 120 children!

Our church has two special funds. One is the Church Renovation Fund. This fund has been established by the Session to offset the cost of needed interior and exterior repairs and replacements. If you have questions concerning this fund, contact Building and Operations Chairman Rick Miller, and if you can help, please write "FUND" on your check and place it in the offering plate.

The second fund is the Sign Fund. This fund has been established to pay for new signage on all corners of the grounds of our church property. Approximately $10,000 will be needed for this project. If you are able to help, please put "SIGN" on your check and place it in the offering plate.

A Special Message from our
Seminary Intern, Lee Styer

To all my friends at Henderson Presbyterian Church:

I would like to thank all of you for your support during my year-long internship with your church.  I have made many new (and renewed) friends during this year -- and this internship will always be special to me.

I am so thankful for the people that have given me suggestions as I continue my studies toward full-time pastoral ministry.  I would especially like to thank Ross Doyel for his many hours of counsel, guidance, and support.  Also Jim LaVeck has been so helpful and encouraging as he has been the lay-coordinator with the internship.  The members of the church have welcomed me during this time and I look forward to "staying in touch" with a wonderful group of people.  I appreciate the work of the Session and Deacons as they continue to do God's work in this area of the Las Vegas Valley -- and throughout the world.

I enjoyed participating in many of the church's events throughout the year -- some of these were kite making and flying, the Halloween play and party, decorating for the Advent season, the Chrismon Service, and the Christmas Eve service.  I thank God for this opportunity to serve Him in this place.

A new "partnership" has come about because of this internship.  It is between Henderson Presbyterian Church and Amazing Grace Ministry.  Members and friends of the church have helped out on the fourth Wednesday of each month with Amazing Grace Ministry -- Thank You!  All in Amazing Grace Ministry look forward to continuing this relationship for a long time to come.  Also the Deacons, Daytimers, a portion of the Peacemaking Offering, and individuals have donated financially and "in-kind" to Amazing Grace.  Your help has been greatly appreciated!

As I mentioned earlier, I look forward to continuing to stay in touch with all of you -- whether it be on Sunday mornings when I come to church, on the fourth Wednesdays at Amazing Grace Ministry, or at special events or services.  THANK YOU ALL for your support, prayers, and words of encouragement!

In His Name,

Lee Styer

Session Meeting Minutes

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

The Session met in quorum in the Fireside Room at Henderson Presbyterian Church. The meeting was opened with prayer at 8:05 p.m. by the Moderator, Rev. Ross Doyel. Active Elders present: Tom Mack, Ken Meats, Rick Miller, and Carole Null. Also in attendance were Anne Mack, Clerk; Lee Styer, Seminary Intern; and Jan Pratt, Elder-elect. Elders Fred Cox, Karen Fallon, Jim LaVeck, Ellen Walsh and Youth Elder Laura Wagner were excused.

Clerk’s Report

The minutes of the November meeting were approved as read. Discussion was held with regards to a more timely insertion of meeting minutes into the monthly church newsletter. Should they be printed before being approved? Should a committee of three elders be formed to read and approve the minutes before the next monthly meeting? Should the Clerk attempt to type the minutes each month within 4-5 days of the meeting and then email/mail them to members, so that approval could be obtained before the newsletter deadline? It was the consensus of those in attendance that the latter suggestion should be tried first, in an attempt to provide the congregation with minutes that reflected the same month as that in which the meeting was held.

New Business

Session approved the request by Adrienne and Robert Mondeau to have their daughter, Marissa, baptized on January 6th. As the parents are not members (Ms.Garcia-Mondeau is employed as the church organist and choir director), Mr. Mack requested that Rev. Doyel encourage them to be active participants in the life of the church as a sign of their commitment to raise their child in the Presbyterian faith. Session agreed that they would like to provide nurture to the entire family in hopes that they might consider membership.

Session voted to accept Morgan and Patricia Trigg into active membership at HPC by letter of transfer.

Rev. Doyel reminded all committee chairs that annual reports are due January 1st.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. following a closing prayer by Lee Styer.

Minutes of a Special Session Meeting

Monday, December 10, 2007

Active Elders present: Tom Mack, Ken Meats, Rick Miller, Carole Null, and Becky Sell. (Minutes of Dec. 10 Session Meeting, continued)

Clerk’s Report

The Session accepted the resignation of Ellen Walsh as an Elder and chair of the Mission committee. A discussion on the secretarial position and the use of office volunteers was tabled until the next meeting. The Session accepted the resignation of Carolyn LaVeck as Treasurer of the Corporation at Henderson Presbyterian Church. The minutes of the December 4th meeting and of the Joint Session/Deacons meeting held that same night were approved as read. The Clerk requested that 19 members be moved to inactive status on the membership rolls and that 9 members be deleted from the rolls. A motion to do so passed. Discussion followed with regards to procedures for new members. It was decided that they will be invited to a Session meeting in order to officially meet and greet them, and to allow them to ask any questions that they might have about HPC. Rev. Doyel and Carole Null will also look into providing sponsors for new members.

2008 Budget

Discussion on the budget was initiated by Rob Bumann, Church Treasurer, who indicated those areas in which HPC was going to go over budget, and those in which there would be funds remaining. He stated that there is still a need for members who would be willing to assist in counting the money after worship services. Ideally, he would like to see four 2-man/woman teams in place, to count on a rotating basis. He reminded the Session that every expense must be recorded and that committee chairs must initial a payment request form for every reimbursable expense. These forms also should indicate from which fund each bill is to be paid. Ken Meats asked if the new Church Pro computer program will be able to provide monthly statements for each committee chair and Rob answered in the affirmative. Denis Pecoraro and Dick Owen were in attendance at this meeting in order to answer any questions with regards to the use of Church Pro for accounting purposes.

Rob also reaffirmed to Session that salaries for the Secretary, Organist and Choir Director must include FICA and asked that mission projects be reviewed each year in November, as all mission bequests are granted in January. Rob was authorized by Session to obtain new signature cards for the church Certificates of Deposit and for all other church accounts. Discussion followed on designated funds and how they are to be displayed in the new chart of accounts and on the monthly income and expense reports. Denis Pecoraro requested that year-end statements be mailed to each individual contributor.

Rev. Doyel stated that even if budget figures were not decided upon at this meeting for each line item, it was necessary that his salary be determined for 2008 before the end of this year. Rev. Doyel excused himself from the meeting and Elder Rick Miller served as Acting Moderator during the discussion that followed. It was moved and seconded that Rev. Doyel be given a 4% raise in all categories of his salary. The motion passed unanimously.

As some figures provided by committee chairs were proven to be inaccurate, and as some chairs were not prepared with estimates for next year’s expenses, Session voted to table the budget discussion and to call a special meeting in early January for the purpose of completing the budget for 2008.

New Business

Carole Null expressed appreciation for the activity bags now being provided for children who attend worship services. These bags are a gift from the Rev. Hilda Pecoraro, Parish Associate.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 8:06 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting is January 15th. The special Session meeting to finish the budget is tentatively scheduled for January 7th. The Clerk will poll the Elders and determine the exact time and date of that meeting.
