THE NEW YEAR!!!

Sunday, January 7, 2007 Communion

Join with us in the "First Communion" of the New Year! Join in the journey of the Magi. This is the last Sunday that the church will have the Christmas decorations displayed. They are always up for two Sundays after Christmas in honor of the Wise Men, The Star of Bethlehem, and Twelfth Night.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Preacher Doyel will be involved this weekend in Presbytery Council and Trustee meetings. Preacher Doyel will be the Lay Leader for this Sunday and we will hear a superb guest speaker!

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Installation of church officers and the church ANNUAL MEETING at 9:30 AM. And NO, you don’t have to be a member to attend. Everybody just come and be here; besides, you just never know when a good old fashioned church fight will break out! Preacher Doyel will preach about bad Elders, bad Deacons, and good Preachers.

Sunday, January 28, 2007

Come hear the best sermon of the year when Preacher Doyel preaches a sermon by William Franklin Graham. Reverend Graham gave a series of sermons upon The Seven Deadly Sins. They are wonderful! Which one will I preach? It is the one YOU need to hear. Come be with the congregation for the "greatest sermon of the year!"

Christian Education News

The Children’s Christmas Pageant, "All I Need to Know About Christmas," was held on Sunday, December 17th at both services. Thank you so much for your support and kind remarks. Our youth and children worked very hard to make this program a success, and everyone had a great time.

Thank You!!

The Committee on Mission would like to thank each and every one of you who contributed gifts and kindness to the Angel Tree Project. Because of your goodness, we were able to make Christmas just a little brighter for OVER 120 children!

Our church has two special funds.
One is the Church Renovation Fund. This fund has been established by the Session to offset the cost of needed interior and exterior repairs and replacements. If you have questions concerning this fund, contact Building and Operations Chairman Rick Miller, and if you can help, please write "FUND" on your check and place it in the offering plate.

The second fund is the New Sign Fund. This fund has been established to pay for new signage on all corners of the grounds of our church property. Approximately $10,000 will be needed for this project. If you are able to help, please put "SIGN" on your check and place it in the offering plate. For more information on this project please contact Membership Chairman, Chris Holman.

The Twelve Days of Christmas—Defined

What in the world do Leaping Lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge that won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.  It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning, plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.

Each element in the carol was a code word for a religious reality, which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtledoves were the Old and New Testaments

Three French Hens stood for faith, hope, and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. Now you know how a strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.
